Modern day companies always have a mission statement aligned with the goals of the company. The mission statement speaks it all. It is however a common point of failure as these companies does not abide to their mission statement.
A company I previously work with has the this words into their mission statement "Innovative Solutions...".
Anybody who will be reading this mission statement will readily know that this company has been using innovations to perform. The innovations register was actually being overfilled with innovations that I don't know if the are worthwhile. One of the innovations what catch my attention is "Recycling bins at every desk".
This is very impressive, is putting a recycling bin at every desk considered an innovation? Does it align with the mossion statement? Yes, no, maybe... You may answer, yes it is for the environment.
I believe you. However, if we take a look at the definition of innovation
innovation
- the act or process of inventing or introducing something new
- a new idea or method or a way of something
In this company, this is probably an innovation.
It is an irony that the management does not accept suggestions of improving a design procedure because that is the way it has been done on previous projects.
The innovation is to simplify specifications to applicable to most areas of the project. Taking out the work scope out of it. Specifics will be done on work scopes and datasheets.
This will reduce the production time of deliverables because it reduces the duplication of contents on each specification. Time reduction is almost fifty percent (50%).
This is a true innovation aligned with the mission statement "Innovative Solutions..."
There are many companies which do not "walk the talk". The mission statement is in placed to serve as a guideline to every endeavour the company will undertake. But if the management fails to abide, then this a very clear indication that "Mission Fails".
